Reconciliation – Key to Honoring Our Parents

14 05 2013

parents and kidsLast time we talked about Parents, Kids and Thriving and today I want to talk about what it takes to come to that place of honoring your parents, no matter what has happened in your life.

The key is reconciling oneself with the trauma, drama or pain we experienced.  To reconcile is to restore to friendship. We learn valuable keys to reconciliation as we look at what God did for us through Christ.

For in him (Christ) all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Col 1:19 -20

Let’s break this verse down, God knew we were sinners, so He chose to pay the price to bring us back into relationship, through the blood of the cross.  So forpeople in shadow us to enter into this restored friendship (reconciliation) with God we must accept we are sinner to accept Christ Jesus as our savior.

So often we think of reconciliation as just another word for forgiveness. But reconciliation is so much more.  Reconciliation is a truth encounter as well as a sacrificial choice to forgive. It is why as we look to honor our parents we must look at the truth of who we were then (children) and who our parent were (adults charged by God to care and protect us) that we are able to look at what happened and truthfully stiff through our feelings and the effects those events had on our lives. As we heal we are better equipped to evaluate the skills and abilities our parents had to protect and care for us and come to a place of peace and reconciliation with events and the flawed human beings our parents are.

Physical reconciliation with our parents may not be possible, because of death, or some other reason, but as we reconcile ourselves with the events of our lives we come to a place of peace so God can activate our ability to honor our parents as God intends.

Blessings and Complete Joy,

Millie

Parents, Kids and Thriving!

11 05 2013

parents and kidsAs we look to celebrate Mother’s Day in May and Father’s Day in June.  What do these two verses have in common?

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.   Pro 22:6 ESV

“‘Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

Deu 5:16 ESV

The answer is, these verses are about the relationship between a child and their parents, giving keys to thriving in this relationships.

There are certain things a child needs to thrive. In Proverbs 22 we learn children want and need to learn, with few exceptions, children are teachable. Being teachable allows children to learn the needed skills to grow into mature individuals who contribute to the community around them.

Just as the child thrives by being taught, so a parent thrives as they are honored. From Deuteronomy 5 we learn, it is the child’s job to honor the parent, but remembering Proverbs 22,  a child learns by watching. So honoring our parent is something we learn to do, and this is why we are commanded to honor our parents.  God also knows every parent is flawed in some way, shape or form, so he reveals the blessing we receive as we choose to honor them, that we may live long and it may go well with us.

As a child who grew up in a home that was very abusive, I have chosen to honor my parents because as flawed individuals they did the best they could with the little skills they had and for that I can always be thankful.

Blessings and Complete Joy,

Millie

An Office for CJM

7 05 2013

office space - picture 2If you have been following my blog you read about the challenge God has given me to believe for an office of my own (April 6th).

Two weeks ago I could sense the Lord speaking to me again, saying, “You know you are now non-profit and you need to begin thinking about how to use the money that has accumulated in your account for the kingdom.” So I asked him how he wanted it use. Then I saw the offices at KPI and said “okay Lord, I will go and see what can be done”.

I have been volunteering in this suite of offices for the Christian Chamber for over 6 months so while I was there I got the chance to talk with one of the counselors about renting some of her space, then talked to my board about splitting her rent for a part-time office. They all thought that was a good idea. What I didn’t know what that my vision was not big enough.

I made an appointment with the manager of KPI to inquire about sharing the space and he told me that things had changed for that counselor, so sharing an office was no longer an option, but he already had another option, to rent a smaller office across the hall for $200 a month. I left there stunned. What was God up to?

The office was only 6′ x 9′, and it had no windows, but then I remembered how every week as I volunteered for the Christian Chamber, I heard the Lord speaking to me about how this room was to become the CJM office. So why was I now surprised when this was the room I was offered.

Two months ago, when the Lord first said CJM would have an office I never realized everything was in place, I am simply amazed by what a great and mighty God we have.

Blessings and Complete Joy,

Millie

The Double Portion Blessing!

4 05 2013

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIn this post, we continue exploring the gifts we receive from God through our prayer relationship.  The first gift was love, the second peace, the third revelation. These gifts come over and over again, strengthening and encouraging as you become whom He created you to be. The fourth gift is provision which we looked at last time. Today will look at the fifth gift, the double portion blessing.

(You can begin reading the entire series by visiting our post dated April 9th. We pick up the prayer shawl story where we left off last time.)

I had learned so much more than I ever expected from this new prayer shawl, so as I looked to create a head covering by twisting and then pulling the materialdouble portion over my head  I discovered the fifth gift, the double portion blessing.

As we receive the gift of provision we can become overwhelmed by the depth of God’s love for us, because his provision goes so much deeper than material things. His love and provision have an aspect which ministers to us emotionally and spiritually.

There is something simply amazing which I have witness over and over again as I twist the shawl, putting it over the person’s head a second time. It brings with it a deeper level of love, trust, security and intimacy, the first portion.  Then as they lift the edge of the shawl they come under the protective covering which is the second part of the blessing!  Speaking personally it is like nothing I have ever experienced before.

As I end this story of the prayer shawl I hope you are encouraged by the amazing blessings and gifts which are ours as we reach out to God in prayer!

Blessings and Complete Joy,

Millie

God’s Gift of Provision!

30 04 2013

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIn this post, we continue exploring the gifts we receive from God through our prayer relationship.  The first gift was love, the second peace, the third revelation. These gifts can come over and over again as the Lord pours out on you, strengthening and encouraging as you become whom He created you to be. The fourth gift is provision which is the topic of this post today.

(You can begin reading the entire series by visiting our post dated April 9th. We pick up the prayer shawl story where we left off last time.)

We pray and receive God’s love, we pray and receive God’s peace, we pray and receive God’s revelation which prepares to pray and receive God’s provision. This is a beautiful picture of both our relationship with God in prayer, which answers why so often we seem to wait so long for our yes, provision, to come.

This shawl is call Adversity.

This shawl is call Adversity.

God cares more about you than you could ever imagine. Remembering we are clay in the potter’s hands, Romans 9:20 – 23. It is in the heat of adversity as we wait, where we are molded by His love. It is as we wait, where He shares His peace and revelation, molding us into the beautiful vessels able to receive His provision!

We must let go of the notion of being like dogs running after scraps of provision from the table of a faceless god, and embrace our provision as a nature part of our relationship with our God, who truly loves us. We receive our Father’s love, peace and through revelation we become aware that our wants and what God knows we need maybe two very different things. As we come into this correct understanding, we can let go of our wants, to rightly embrace God’s provision which He desires us to receive.

Receiving God’s provision is less about what we want and more about who that provision will mold us into being, so much different then the world! God is great and greatly to be praised!

Blessings and Complete Joy,

Millie

Revelation, God’s gift!

27 04 2013

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIn this post, we continue exploring the gifts we receive from God through our prayer relationship.  The first gift was love, the second peace and today we look at the third, revelation.

(You can begin reading the entire series by visiting our post dated April 9th. We pick up the prayer shawl story where we left off last time.)

The more I share about this new prayer shawl the more I learn about God and how our relationship is supposed to work. It goes beyond prayer to everything but for this discussion I limit it to prayer.

The deeper we are willing to go in sharing our hearts with God, the deeper are the revelations God can release to us. This is the Open Door

third gift God releases as we pray. It gives new meaning to ask, seek and knock.

“Continue to ask, and God will give to you. Continue to search, and you will find. Continue to knock, and the door will open for you.

Mat 7:7

The door of revelation (divine truth) is waiting for us as we live in relationship with God, for He desires us to know his heart and understand why He is allowing thing to go the way they are.

Recently while on a ministry trip, I began seeking the Lord when a woman who was scheduled to speak was delayed. When we go to the Lord first in prayer instead running off to fighting the enemy we may be pleasantly surprised as we find the reason why, which so often alludes us causing us to stumble.

Because of going to the Lord for revelation, our team could encourage the body of Christ to look for the blessing, rather than wasting time fighting the enemy who had nothing to do with why the woman was delayed.

Revelation is God’s gift to us, so remember to take the time to ask, seek and knock for the door will be opened to you!

Blessings and Complete Joy,

Millie

Our Second Prayer Gift – The Gift of Peace

23 04 2013

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIn this post, we continue exploring the gifts we receive from God through our prayer relationship.  The first gift was the gift of love and today we look at the second, the gift of peace.

(We pick up the prayer shawl story where we left off last time.  You can begin reading the entire series by visiting our post dated April 9th.)

As I looked once again at the prayer shawl I had a deep sense there were more gifts the Lord gives through our prayer relationship.  Then sweetly I was reminded;

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”CIMG0528

Philippians 4:7

It was then I realize, this is the second gift!

As our prayers go up to God, his love comes down (the first gift) and as we continue to pray God’s peace (the second gift) comes down to us. Years ago I learned to pray until I had peace because I was living in so much turmoil, sometimes thinking, “God I am going to stubbornly wait until I get the peace I need.” Now I understood this is a free gift God desire to give!

This changes how I think about prayer. Just as you wait at a stop light knowing it will turn green, we can wait expectantly for God’s gift of peace to flow down no matter what our situation. Sometimes we might have to do some confession, or forgiveness to receive that peace, but the free gift is there if we are seeking him.

God is great and greatly to be praised because no matter what is going on in our lives He sends down his peace as we seek out relationship with him.

Blessings and Complete Joy,

Millie
