Keys to Blessing the Family Mountain

This is the third in the series on the Seven Mountains of Prayer, which are the focus of a 31-day prayer guide for Oregon. In these blogs I share what I have found to be of great value as I pray through these seven mountains or focuses, which are family, religion, education, media, entertainment, business and government.  In my previous blog, I discussed the trials and expectations of prayer. As we looked specifically at the mountain called family, it takes little effort to recall wounds that can and do hamper our prayer. So the first step in prayer for our families is remembering to confess what we feel and forgive anyone who comes to mind.

 

We often think of the family being together on the mountain top, like the picture I selected for this blog. We quickly think of the happy times and those special times with joy in our hearts. As we turn to pray for this family mountain, we see in Scripture how God, who made families, also knows how tough living in a family can be, and I believe this is why he gives a wonderful promise in Deuteronomy 5:16: “Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”

 

As I look at praying for families, this first Scripture key stands out to me. . This scripture often reminds us how we should treat our parents, yet I am also reminded that we moms and dads within the family need to honor each other as well because as we do, our home is blessed.

 

There is a deep value in praying this Scripture for those families broken by divorce, for long after the marriage has ended, the fact that Moms and Dads don’t honor each other may impact family lines for generations, as blessings God desire to give are lost forever. As we pray for families, I believe every family has the ability to come to that place of blessing!

 

Pray for families to commit to serving the Lord is the second key to blessing the family mountain. I suggest praying Joshua 24:15. “But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

 

Praying for families to commit themselves and their households to the Lord can have a major impact on everything that happens there, literally right down to the air that circulates in every home, which in turn affects every relationship outside of the home as well.

 

My third and final key for the family mountain is Ephesians 3:14-19

“For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge–that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

 

This passage releases the power of being rooted in God and the strength of God. As the family understands the love of Christ, this makes the family mountain the blessing it is to be in us all.

My sister and best friend and I have been teaching the Reclaiming the 7 Mountains of Culture Childrens Curriculum at my Apartment community. I will include these scriptures for the Parents as well who are attending.
