Today we look at Education the third of seven mountains, based on the Seven Mountains of Prayer focus of a 31-day prayer guide for Oregon. These seven mountains or focuses are family, religion, education, media, entertainment, business and government.
Proverbs 22:6 which states: “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” This answers the why we must be willing to scale the mountain called education, though not everyone is called to be a certified teacher. Education comes in many forms from parenting and formalized teaching to coaching and mentoring, looking at Proverbs 22:6 just a bit deeper we see that we are all children in any area we lack the maturity and understanding to function. This is the very thing Paul warns us about in Hebrews 5:13-14. “Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” This is the second why of education, to distinguish from good and evil.
I believe this is why as we think of praying for the mountain called education we must pray first for salvation, for the only true way to distinguish good from evil is to have a Christ filled life. John 3:16 is a very positive scripture to pray for salvation so I would begin there. After praying for salvation of those who are called to the mountain of education I pray for the call or anointing to this mountain by God would remain in them.
1 John 2:27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit–just as it has taught you, remain in him.
I have worked in the school system for several years substituting on the play grounds, in the lunch rooms and in the offices as well as working with kids directly over the years and I have watched our educators fall away because they lose the grasp of the calling God has upon their lives, so praying this is key and is a real blessing for those who are involved in education. Tandem with that is the need for the students to respect, honor and listen to their teachers, these two things, loosing sight of their calling and the lack of respect cause so much attrition on the mountain of education.
Which is why I believe praying Titus 2:11-14 for the student of those climbing this mountain is such a blessing.
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope–the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
I would be remiss if I didn’t also share 2 Timothy 3:3-4 with you for it reminds us why we must continue to pray protection over this mountain of education and those who scale it.
“For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”
The final scripture which I pray as a blessing for those who scale the mountain of education is Colossians 3:15-17
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
