The depth of the Governmental Mountain

Today we look at Government the seventh and final of seven mountains, based on the Seven Mountains of Prayer focus of a 31-day prayer guide for Oregon. These seven mountains or focuses are family, religion, education, media, entertainment, business and government.

In 1Tim 2:1-4 we are encouraged to pray, intercede and give thanks for everyone, this is God’s heart. Timothy reminds us; this includes those in authority, and tells us to pray “that they may have peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness”. We can’t pray God’s heart if we don’t have God’s heart, so we must begin by letting go of anything we feel the government has done to us, whether those feels focus on an agency or an individual, we must forgive.

John Paul Jackson in his book, Needless Casualties of War writes: “When we change our hearts and our actions, God hears from Heaven and heals our land”. He bases his comment on 2 Chronicles 7:14. This Old Testament the truth is possible as we walk in the grace of Christ rather then the filter of our unresolved feelings of hurt or anger.

Some of the issues to cover as we look at praying for those on the government mountain:

■ Personal integrity

TIT 2:11-12 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.  It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age…

■ Family

Everyday we see the effects of the government mountain on the lives of families. As the wife of a retired Postal employee we saw first hand the effects that “Going Postal” had on a family. The stressors are often too much to bear for those on the mountain of government and do affect their families.

■ Work environment

In the last several days we have all seen first hand the stress for those climbing the government mountain; look at President Obama who had a beer recently with a professor and a police officer at the White House. Both President Obama and the police officer were just trying to do their jobs and when mistakes were made by all three parties the work environment was effected. Undoubtedly deadlines were missed, adding stress and increasing everyone’s work load. The working environment for those on the mountain of government is highly scrutinized and they need our prayers.

Finally we should not overlook this truth, God should be given free reign on the top of this mountain. When this is the case, the wisdom and favor God provides those on the mountain of government is beyond measure and we would do well to pray with this focus as well.
