The World’s Call to Choose Life

24 07 2010

Today we begin talking about choosing life as we look at the first of two calls, the world’s call which everyone must wrestle with as they face life’s choices. We are using the text 2 Kings 18:31-32.

“Do not listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and fig tree and drink water from his own cistern, until I come and take you to a land like your own, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey. Choose life and not death!”  2 Kings 18:31-32

Here we see the commander of the army of the king of Assyria speaking to the Israelites telling them to choose life meaning survival and making promises to take them to a land (captivity) much like their own.

Does this sound familiar? Looking at the temptations of Christ, the devil did a similar thing; first he told Jesus if you will do (give up God’s plan and purposes and walk into captivity), then I will give (life the easy way). The call of the world to choose life finds it foundation in the enemy’s call which is full of control and captivity.

The easy thing for us as it would have been for Christ and the Israelites would have been to accept the enemies call.  When we accept the world’s call to life, we walk right into captivity and control, for suddenly someone else is making all the decisions, and charting the path for us, rather than doing the hard thing and receive God’s call to life.

Next time we will talk about what God’s call to life is and how it affects our daily lives.
