The Grays of Grace

2 11 2010

Recently I was thinking about how we see life as Black and White, but God sees the grays of grace!

You and I do the easy thing and pass judgment on ourselves and others (black and white thinking). Did we do the right thing; did we do the wrong thing? We praise ourselves for doing the right thing and then beat ourselves up when we do the wrong thing, leaving no room for the gray of grace.

The gray of grace is where God lives in relationship with us, for God is love. God sees the good, the bad and the ugly and through the eyes of love, sees the grays of grace.

I Corinthians 13:4-7 tells us why love is the key to seeing the grays of grace. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrong. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

This transformation of seeing the grays of grace begins with how we view ourselves; we need to be more patient with ourselves and treat ourselves with kindness. There is a gentleness to my day when I am patient and kind with myself, and because the pressure is off an amazing thing happens as this patiencs extends beyond myself to those around me and kindness enters in because patience and kindness go hand in hand.

Next time we will talk about how the rest of this Love passage affects the grays of grace.
