Thirst vs. Blessing

21 05 2011

This is the second blog in the series called Murmuring Defeats God’s blessings. We will be looking today at the first of three causes of murmuring.

People who murmur are dissatisfied with things around them and rather than being part of the solution they become part of the pollution by murmuring.

Exodus 15:24 tells us of the people grumbling (murmuring) against Moses when they said “What are we to drink?” The Israelites had just crossed the Red Sea and had been walking for three days when they became thirst.

Most people in America have never experienced being thirsty like this, unless you have been living on the street or survived a disaster, because water is plentiful in many places. The closest I have ever come was while living in rural Alaska when our electricity would go out we had no water coming up from the well. It would have been easy for me to murmur against God in these situations since I had three small children and it never seemed to fail that my husband would be off traveling on business.

My trust in God grew because He always got us through, we had a working camp stove, and food in the house.  I remember each morning I would look to see if we had fresh snow out on the deck, which I could bring inside so that we had clean water to drink. I learned so much about trusting God in Alaska while my husband was traveling.

In Exodus 15:25 we are reminded when we trust God like Moses did, God can make even the most bitter of circumstances sweet as He did with the water at Marah.
