Embracing the New Season

3 09 2011

This new season is all about following ever more closely with the movements of God.

DT 5:32-32 So be careful to do what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left. Walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.

We need two specific things to follow God’s movements in this new season, a compass and a bearing.

A compass is the device for determining direction. Each of us have something which determines our direction. For some in the world, providing for themselves or their families determines the path, for other it is the quest for money or other vanity, yet for we who know Christ, who are called according to his purpose, the bible should be our compass. Psalms 119:105 tell us: God’s word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. In this new season we must allow the bible to determine our direction.

For the bible to become our compass we need to learn to read it and then apply it in our lives. Using a compass regularly allows us to become familiar with our direction and we learn how to use it effectively. The bible has many uses besides collecting dust on our bookshelf. It is a source of power and comfort as well as confrontation and support. It isn’t the quantity of time you spend in the bible; rather it is the quality of the time you spend. I can take 5 minutes one day and it stays with me for several weeks, that’s quality time in the bible and allows the bible to become your compass. I can also spend an hour in the bible (quantity) where because of the stresses of the day, I don’t allow it to impact me at all even though I can feel quite satisfied for I have finished my required reading for the day. Reading the bible in this way does me little good on those days when I am truly lost and I can think my compass the bible is broken when in fact it is user error.

Next time we will look at who sets our bearing, the other key to following the movements of God during this new season!

It’s amazing how many of us do not use the compass God has given us. We may even own many verions in our home, yet they remain unopened or only opened once a week at church. We need to be in the Word each and every day to get our bearing and keep our bearing.
