Sin vs. Human Nature

Embracing Choice

I am a fan of the writings of Oswald Chambers. Recently in reading his devotional My Utmost for His Highest, September 8th, I saw a truth that I wanted to share with you.

Oswald tells us: “Deliverance from sin is not deliverance from human nature”.  He goes on to say, “Jesus dealt with sin in redemption”.

Far too often we want to look and say I sinned or the devil made me do it, when in fact we haven’t won the battle with our own human nature. “The conflict is along the line of turning our natural life into a spiritual life, and this is never done easily, nor does God intend for it to be done easily,” Oswald tells us.

Taking authority over our human nature is not for the faint of heart. It is accomplished as we exercise our human muscle of choice. This muscle can take years to build and just as with an athlete whose muscles become sore, we sometimes wonder if we are really making any progress in our efforts to run the race which Paul talks about in Hebrews 12.

When we don’t exercise choice Oswald tells us; our human nature “can erect ramparts against the knowledge of God”.  Oswald encouraging us to “determinately demolish” the human nature so we might find God.

We overcome our human nature as we choose to live in and by the spirit!
