Receiving, Believing and Maturity

23 06 2012

We are continuing our series on What is wrong with America’s faith. Last time we looked at why accepting isn’t enough and today we will look at receiving, believing and maturity.

John 1:12 tells us: “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, children born not of natural descent, not of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”

Receiving we learned earlier is to allow to enter, through the mind or senses. When we receive Christ through our mind, will, and emotions, we allow him to become part of us and we a part of him. To believe is to have a firm conviction in someone or something. Only as we receive Christ can we have a firm conviction, believing in who he is and what he did. Our conviction becomes secure as we grow and mature in Christ.

Recently I heard in a Charles Rose interview this statement, “there is no room for grandma’s anymore”. Americans loves youthfulness, and don’t value maturity.  Yet it is the wisdom of maturity that should steer our lives, not the whimsy of youthfulness. What got Eve in trouble was not having a secure conviction as she was faced testing  in the garden. Maturity is knowing what you should do and doing it!

Today I am more mature in Christ than five years ago, for he has walked me through times of testing where I had to choose what I believed. It is only through receiving Christ could my belief in Christ become secure.

Join me next time as we talk about our good intentions and God’s will.

Your spiritual maturity will be proportionate to your teachability. Are you teachable as you listen to your pastor’s message? Are you teachable as you sit under the teaching of a godly small group leader? Are you teachable as you spend time alone with God in prayer and Bible reading?
