Pressed into Action by the Spirit

21 08 2012

We are in a series called, Moving in the Spirit, and last time we talked about being stirred into action, today as we look at Acts 18:5 to explore the subtle difference between being stirred and pressed to act by the spirit.

“And when Silas and Timotheus were coming from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.”

Acts 18:5

Often times we find ourselves pressed by the spirit into immediate action, that is the difference between being stirred into action with time to prepare verse being pressed into immediate action by the spirit of God.

There are moments that we need to speak truth to set people free, and in those times we must rely on the spirit to give us just the right words in that situation. Sitting with a client, or as I visit with a friend, God gives me just the right words to encourage and strengthen them. There are other times, I have been called to give a word of correction. In both instances there was no time to take time away to prepare and pray, I was pressed into immediate action by the spirit to speak truth, just as Paul did.

The time for prayer and preparation is before you are pressed, because when you are pressed, it is what is in you that will be pressed out of you much like a garlic press releases the garlic. Pray and study so that when you are pressed there will be living water which comes forth!
