A Call to Genuine Affection

4 12 2013
21909694_sWe are in a series called what is Love Anyway? To read all of this series on love scroll back to The Beatitudes of Love, 11/9/2013.
Last time we transitioned from the Hebrew of the Old Testament and into the Greek of the New Testament, today we look at the seventh distinct use of the word Love in the bible, phileo, found in Matthew 6.
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.”
Mat 6:5
Phileo means to have genuine affection for, denoting personal attachment. This is the Greek word we associate with brotherly love. This is a key12831791_s component to building relationships as well as community. Christ chose his words carefully hoping that we would dig deeper and catch God’s desire for personal connection.
This is in stark contrast with man who often wants to be seen as having genuine affection for someone or something when in truth it is nothing more than a selfish action to protect ourselves or impress others.
Those words in Revelation come to mind:
“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.
I wish you were either one or the other!
So, because you are lukewarm–neither hot nor cold—
I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”
Rev 3:15-16
God desires us to experience genuine affection and personal attachments, loving as Christ first loved us, trusting God rather than protecting ourselves selfishly.
Blessings and Complete Joy,
Millie
