Deep Deep Love of Jesus!

7 12 2013

21909694_sWe are in a series called What is Love Anyway? To read all of this series on love scroll back to The Beatitudes of Love, 11/9/2013.

Last time we looked at phileo and today we look at the eighth distinct use of the word Love in the bible, agape, found in Matthew 24.

Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,

Mat 24:12

Agape means to love, affectionately, so deeply as to have a love feast! It is not a sensual love; rather it is benevolent love, full of charity. This is the6304066_s third aspect of love in the NT which focuses on building community. It is a love that looks beyond the surface to the heart, with love that goes beyond our transitions.

Agape is the word, Jesus used the third time he said to Peter, “Do you love me?” In John 21:17. Knowing this agape love is relational, giving us insight into why he continued by saying, “Then feed my sheep”, for as Peter embraced Christ and his purpose here on earth, he embraced the community which now made up Christ’s body!

Oh, that we would all hear these words which bring redemption, releasing us to do as Peter did and feed Christ’s sheep!
