God’s Love vs. Man’s Respect

14 12 2013

21909694_sWe are in a series called What is Love Anyway? To read all of this series on love scroll back to The Beatitudes of Love, 11/9/2013. Last time we looked at agape and today we look at the ninth distinct use of the word Love in the bible, thelo, found in Mark 12.

“And he (Jesus) said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,..”

Mar 12:38

Thelo has several different meanings:

to will, have in mind, intend

to be resolved or determined, to purpose

to desire, to wish

to love

to like to do a thing, be fond of doing

to take delight in, have pleasure

Looking back at the words of Jesus concerning the scribes, they took delight in being greeted with respect, rather than loving those who passed by as Christ12490293_s intended.

How often do we want everyone to know our titles so others greet us with respect instead of serving others, loving and caring for others as Christ did? He laid down his mantle of Godhood, as he chose to become a child, who becoming one with man became the savior of the world!
